CHARACTER NAME: Kurumi Erika | Cure Marine
SERIES: Heartcatch Precure
CHRONOLOGY: Post-series.
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Okay, so in the world of Heartcatch Precure, everyone has something called a heart flower in their heart. Every flower is unique, and it’s connected to the personality traits of the person that has it. There is also something called a Heart Tree. It floats above the world, connecting the hearts of everyone... and because of that, it has a symbiotic relationship with humans. The tree helps to protect the heart flowers of all humans, and the humans help protect the heart tree! If even one starts to falter in health, the other suffers for it. The Heart Tree will die if the heart flowers of humans wilt due to their negative feelings, and if the Heart Tree dies, the entire world becomes a desert-- even the people, assumedly, become sand themselves.
The ultimate goal of the Desert Messengers - the bad guys of the show - is destroying the Heart Tree and turning the world into a desert. They fight very hard to do it. They take advantage of people that are stewing in their negative feelings and use those feelings to create a monster. From there, they’ll let the monster rampage, and hopefully, if they’re lucky, that monster will create even more negative feelings and cause a giant chain reaction. This is why the Precure exist. The Precure are the good guys, and they fight to protect both humans the Heart Tree and they absolutely refuse to let the bad guys come out on top.
Fifty years prior to the show, the world nearly became a desert! But then it didn’t happen, thanks to a Precure called Cure Flower appearing and beating back the big bad called Dune. After that, every had been peaceful for a fairly long time... until the Desert Messengers began to surface again and continue their reign of terror.
Erika spent her life in Kibougahana, the main city the story takes place in. Her parents run a clothing shop there, too! Her parents are big into fashion, and that was something that got passed down to both of their daughters. Both attempted modeling - a former job of their mother - but only one was actually good at it. That one wasn’t Erika, it was Momoka. Erika accepted that she wasn’t a good model (not that she liked that) and went into fashion design instead. She spent a lot of time and energy on getting good at that, and she even ran the fashion club at her school. At the start of Heartcatch Precure, though, the fashion club was having trouble. That’s why she was sort of happy Tsubomi appeared! It’s this new girl so now she is my friend and what if I got her to join the fashion club. She got yelled at at first, and after that first day of school for Tsubomi, Tsubomi thought that Erika was stalking her.
She wasn’t, they actually just lived next door to each other. Erika tried to help Tsubomi with things and Tsubomi didn’t want her help!!!! And then Momoka, Erika’s sister, berated her for being so forceful. She got overwhelmed by bad feelings and then became the first Desertrian victim of the entire show. For her, the whole experience was just floating around in negative emotions. For Tsubomi, it was the start of her magical girl adventure and she was dubbed “History’s Worst Precure” because she kept crashing into trees and not knowing what to do in the fight. Tsubomi did win, though! She rescued Erika and they became friends. Erika even got Tsubomi to join the fashion club!! Which was exciting for her, of course. It’s honestly a good thing they became friends, considering that Erika became a Precure herself in the very next episode. She had been told earlier that day about Tsubomi’s Precure adventure, and while she initially turned down being one, she accepted later. She even had her Precure named planned out before it actually happened, since Tsubomi gave her time to plan.
After that, the series became pretty formulaic. The girls would meet someone that was having a problem, they would become a Desertrian victim, and they would save the person from the terrible fate of a wilted Heart Flower. The Heart Tree got better as time went on thanks to the efforts of the girls, too. They spend a lot of time becoming stronger and braver, and the only time this system is ever really broken up is when Cure Sunshine joins and Cure Moonlight recovers her ability to become a Precure.
The pattern was broken for good when it was time for the girls to get their magical powerup. What they had to face was probably one of the hardest ones yet, simply because of what they had to fight. They had to fight themselves-- or, well, that’s what they thought. The true answer for this situation was to accept the negative aspects of their personalities and to love themselves. Erika was one of the first ones out of this, and she cheered on Tsubomi until a monster appeared and had to be fought. She was so happy when Tsubomi managed to succeed at her test, since it meant that her friend was A) okay, and B) they could kick some serious ass. After that’s done, it goes back to the usual formulaic makeup of the show until they go to Paris in the movie for some reason that is never actually stated. The important thing is that they went to Paris and kicked some ass!! There was a dragon, a flower explosion, help from everyone on Earth, and it all resulted in a giant powerup for the girls. It was badass. There were also fashion shows involved during this time since I guess that’s kind of why they were in Paris in the first place.
And then they kicked ass until Dune, the biggest big bad of the show, appeared. None of the girls stood a chance and they were all beaten in one hit, including the magical miracle Cure Grandma turned Cure Flower guest Precure. Dune proceeded to reclaim his power and then he ran off with Cure Grandma. The girls were left as they were with only Coupe, Cure Grandma’s fairy partner, to take care of them. He took them to a garden, where they all proceeded to wake up and find out that Dune fucked over Earth by being a dick and dancing on the corpse of the Heart Tree. There was a lot of despair at first, until the girls all met everyone that they had helped during the course of the show. The fact that they were there gave them a lot of hope, and they were able to jump back in without much of a problem.
With a renewed fighting spirit, they destroyed a monster and possibly(?) showed everyone their true identities as Precure. Anyway, the important part is that they destroyed a monster and then set off to the secret base of the bad guys so that they could kick some serious ass because it wouldn’t be a magical girl show if they didn’t actually do that.
Of course, this wouldn’t be endgame without a few boss battles. Erika fought Kumojacky, the extremely hotblooded Desert Messenger that actually wouldn’t be out of place in a super robot show. She purified him, and assumedly, he went off to reawaken somewhere else with a purified heart. From there, there was a series of events that led to dressing up as a bad guy minion, running through the space base (because what kind of villain doesn’t have a space base?) and finding Cure Grandma.
Not too long after that the final boss battle starts. I mean, it has to be a final boss battle, Dune has close to three or four different forms! But anyway, the final boss battle starts. There is a lot of fighting and the Precure are actually really good and succeeding! Until Dune gets really pissed off and then he beats everything back because he never asked to be purified in the first place. When he gets this pissed, he takes on a form big enough to punch the world and then in a decision that took no time at all, the Precure decided to fight him back because fuck you Dune.
Tsubomi tries to talk Dune down from his rage, since this is a magical girl show and a shoujo speech always has to happen. It doesn’t work, as expected, and they go back to a fight. Using the power of the Heartcatch Mirage - the powerup they gained back during the shadow selves battle - they became Infinity Precure.
Then they decided to punch him in the face with brass knuckles made out of infinite love and they won. It was awesome. Earth got out okay too, I guess.
A couple of months later there’s an epilogue with the girls discussing what to do with their lives. Erika decides that she wants to keep going on with fashion design! That is awesome, too. The Heart Tree is definitely alive again too, thanks to the efforts of the Precure.
PERSONALITY:
As a person, Erika is very energetic, bubbly, loud, impatient, stubborn, and pushy. She has a tendency to say exactly what's on her mind, even if it might not be the best thing to say at the time, and she can bea bit really nosy! That's what led to her trying to befriend Tsubomi right off the bat. She wanted to know about the new girl at school, and while Tsubomi was shy and didn't actually really want to talk to her that much, she wouldn't let that stop her. She didn't even let that stop her when Tsubomi said no to the fashion club, at first, or even when Tsubomi tried to tell her she didn't want to be pushed around by her. So... uh, I guess it's safe to say that she's not very good at understanding when 'no' means 'no' when it comes to friendships sometimes. When she determines that someone is going to be her friend, they are her friend and they get no choice in the matter.
Erika has always had an interest in fashion - both with modeling and creating fashion of her own. It's kind of a family thing for her, considering that her parents run a fasion shop called Fairy Drop. So! She grew up surrounded by fashion and the fashion world, and before she wanted to create clothes, she wanted to be a model! She tried, but she wasn't anywhere near as good as her sister at it. This is a source of a lot of jealousy and conflict on her end because... while she admires her sister, she is jealous of her skill and how good she is at what she does when compared to Erika's own efforts.
Because of her jealousy and the way she's sometimes treated as a younger sister, she often reads into the things her sister says a bit too much and can get mad over it. Being friends with Tsubomi and a Precure has led to her maturing and learning to not to that, but this was definitely a thing for her at one point! The reason she went into designing and creating her own clothes was because of her failure at modeling, and partially because she wanted to excel at something and not be in her sister's shadow. Creating clothes allowed her to do that while still doing something in the fashion world, because Erika is genuinely interested in fashion and what wearing the right clothes can do for a person in how they percieve and feel about themselves, and how sometimes the right outfit can really cheer someone up.
This jealously, before it started to get better, though, led to Erika's heart flower wilting and it being used to make a monster. Tsubomi was just discovering her powers at that point, but she did manage to purify the monster and rescue Erika. The feelings went away a bit, and that was what put Erika on a path to fixing the issues with her sister. She still never talked about it much until Tsubomi became her best friend, though. She had a lot of problems with jealousy and being in the shadows as a younger sister, after all, and that's not something that's solved overnight even with magical flower bullshit. She has learned to accept that it's part of herself, though, and while it takes time to get over that stuff, she isn't going to deny that the issues are there.
Anyway-- it's after the monster incident that she becomes a Precure (and also manages to get Tsubomi to join the fashion club). She's determined to do what she can to help people, and she does her best to do it. It's like she says when she's had enough - she has a heart as wide as the ocean, and even then, there's a point where she will kick ass and take names. She genuinely wants to help people, and she will do her best to do it. In battle, she is very hotblooded (it's obvious out of battle too), and she won't hesitate to punch a grown man in the face if that's what she has to do to win and protect everyone. She's also a bit reckless, which can also apply out of battle.
When the big bad really appears, Erika fights one of the bad guys that are in the way, and she wins. Even when she's tired, she keeps going, which shows that she's a pretty determined person - she had the hope of all of her friends and family, and she wasn't about to let them down. She didn't. Her friends and her took down the big bad, purifying him, and they saved the Tree of Hearts from being destroyed.
Despite Erika's brattiness and her occassional laziness, she does care very deeply about her friends. She acts very mature when they need help with something, and she's actually pretty good at being comforting and calming when the situation calls for it. It's also possible for Erika to be pretty sympathetic for others, too. While she's... herself in all of her loud and pushy glory, she is a very good friend when she's not coming off as kind of selfish to others.
At the end of the series, nothing changes. She's still working on growing up, but she will never stop being a friendly, energetic, and hotblooded person.
POWER:
Items
Erika will be able to summon the things needed to complete her magical girl transformation. The changes in this transformation include hair color and length, eye color, and gives her access to the powers that don’t require items. This is what she looks like, both before and after.
Tsubomi already has the Heartcatch Mirage, so that won’t be an item Erika needs for anything since... well, Tsubomi has it.
Enhanced Physical Attributes
In her magical girl form, Erika gains a lot of awesome physical abilities. She is stronger, faster, more agile, her defense is higher, and she can kick some serious ass. I would like to note that power =/= skill, so if someone is more skilled than her she will still be able to be defeated no matter how strong she is. She can only do what she knows how to do, so if she wants to get stronger, she’ll have to put in all of the hard work needed to actually get the skills needed to get better.
Flowery Energy Bullshit
As a Precure, she can gain the ability to gather some kind of special energy to increase a single shot or her melee strength. The more emotional she is, the stronger she will be! However, the type of emotion fueling this is very important. Righteousness is the good emotion to be fueling things with, anger is something that’s bad. Or, at least, it’s heavily implied that using her flowery energy bullshit for the forces of anger is bad and the situation won’t be pretty if it were to ever happen. So! Ultimately, yes, it’s better if the flowery energy bullshit is powered by righteousness.
This also allows her to combine her powers with the other Precure. It’s a theme for the metaseries to make it so that a Precure is no good when she is alone, so she needs to depend on her friends to help her get through the bad things that they face. Basically, when with another Precure, she is able to work with them and be able to kick even more ass than she would if she were left alone.
Like Tsubomi, she has a special finishing attack of her own. Her finishing attack is the Precure Blue Forte Wave, and it’s performed using a small baton that she calls the Marine Tact. It’s supposed to purify the hearts of others and dispel evil, but that only works if the bad guy actually has some good deep down. It causes no physical damage, and the most it will do is relax someone so much that they fall asleep as the evil is kicked out or something.
AS A NOTE: I know her powers are quite similar to Tsubomi’s no matter how you look at it, but Erika and Tsubomi’s powers in the show are super alike minus their Cure names and colors due to them being the first two Precure and them being at their strongest when they’re together.
